THE FREELANDER CHALLENGE

The Britpart Freelander Challenge

“The Affordable Rally Alternative”

The whole purpose of the Freelander Challenge is to allow people the option to have a go at off-road racing without breaking the bank. Freelanders are relatively cheap and to compete in the Challenge need only a little modification. The Freelander Challenge was founded by two avid 4x4 enthusiasts, Selwyn Kendrick and Chris Ratter.

The Freelander Challenge is off-road racing in standard production Land Rover Freelanders with only the addition of the safety features needed to comply with the requirements of the MSA. The cars don’t need to be road taxed unless you also want to be eligible to enter stage rallies or nip to the shops in your race car. The cars are all similar, only the skill of the driver and navigator will make the difference needed to get the points.

To make this sport as accessible as possible, to include those without workshops or spare space to store a car, we can handle the modification of your Freelander to the specification it needs to race, as well as storage and (transport??) to and from the events. We are also able to supply a pit crew, including a truck with specialist Freelander parts on board, for all competitors that have their Freelander from us.

Any Freelander 1 (1997-2006) is eligible, however there are weight penalties depending on the model and engine size used.

Your engine should be kept standard with the exception of air filters and exhausts.

Other requirements:

• An FIA approved roll cage is mandatory and we recommend the ‘Safety Devices’ cage as this has full FIA approval.

• Seats – FIA standard - note that these do not have to be in date

• Seatbelts – FIA standard - note that these do not have to be in date

• FIA Approved HANS compatible helmet

• Fire Extinguisher 2.4l AFFF

• Spill Kit

• SOS ‘OK’ board

• Towrope

• 4mm Rubber Mud Flaps

As it runs alongside the British Cross Country Championship, The Freelander Challenge has a range of venues throughout the country. There is a single central service area at each event offering a great atmosphere for crew, mechanics and supporters. Camping is not only available free of charge but seen as a must by most entrants – many events are over two days and there is often entertainment in the evenings.
